Während im 19. Jahrhundert viele russische Stoffdrucke inspiriert waren von den floralen, französischen Mustern, die sich damals so grosser Beliebtheit erfreuten, sind andere eine Mischung aus westlichen und östlichen Motiven. Wenn man florale Stoffmuster mit Ikaten aus Uzbekistan kombiniert, erinnert es an ein „Eurasian Flair“. Hier (Foto Paul Costello) zum Beispiel ein Interieur mit Stühlen, die mit prächtigen Ikaten aus Uzbekistan bezogen sind. Traumhaft! Auf den Sofas Kissen mit farbenfrohen Blumenmustern und einer geometrischen Borte.

Ikat ist eine Webtechnik, bei der das Garn vor der Verarbeitung abschnittsweise eingefärbt wird. Mehrere Farben sind möglich, es können auch ganze Abschnitte ungefärbt bleiben. Im einfachsten Fall entstehen auf dem Gewebe einfache Streifen. Indem unterschiedliche Abschnitte gefärbt werden, können geometrische Muster, aber auch komplexe Strukturen hergestellt werden.

Hier auch auf einem Kleidungsstück die Mischung aus floralen und Streifen-Mustern.

Tiffany Blue is one of my super duper always-makes-me-happy colors. Very joyful… and offers so many color matching options when you design with it. Mix it with brown, black, white, yellow, pink, orange. Tiffany Blue goes well with so many colors and looks good on anything: a dress, a bed, a door, a sofa, a rug…….. so beautiful!

Tiffany Blue is the colloquial name for the blue color associated with Tiffany & Co., the New York City jewelry company. The Tiffany Blue color is protected as a color trademark by Tiffany & Co. The color is produced as a private custom color by Pantone (for color designers: with PMS number 1837, the number deriving from the year of Tiffany’s foundation. As a trademarked color, it is not publicly available and is not printed in the Pantone Matching System swatch books).

China Glaze has a nail polish called “For Audrey” which is Tiffany Blue. Chanel has an new it-nail polish as well, called “nouvelle vague vernis 527”… so glamourous!

Antique Ottoman cushions lie on a daybed, a Tuareg bed with pillows covered in silk from Uzbekistan is in a guest bedroom. A Syrian oil lamp and a Mauritanian basket next to traditional Moroccan side tables painted in an harlequin pattern are beautiful mixed together to an eclectic style of modern nomads. Im Einrichtungshaus Guinevere in London’s berühmter Kings Road (auch Tricia Guild hat dort ihren Showroom) findet man wunderbare indische, grob gewobene Baumwoll-Bodendecken in blau-weissen Streifenmustern. Sie sind traditionell handgewoben und werden Dhurries genannt. Die Farbnuancen sind unendlich vielfältig. Ich liebe die ausgewaschenen, sonnengebleichten Farbtöne, die an eine wild-romantische-Meeresküste erinnern. Am liebsten würde ich aus diesen Stoffen ein Zelt am Meeresstrand errichten....und einfach bleiben... ich glaube, dann bin ich "angekommen"...

Ein ganz besonderes Edelstück ist der Koffer, der mit Dhurries bezogen ist. Exklusiv bei Guinevere zu haben.

Die Gründerin von Guinevere ist ein Französin, die in den 50ger Jahren des letzten Jahrhunderts nach London auswanderte. Angefangen hatte sie als Hutmacherin und sich dann leidenschaftlich in Antiquitäten verliebt. Heute führen ihre beiden Söhne erfolgreich den Laden.

Im Louvre in Paris gibt es derzeit eine wundervolle Ausstellung über dekorative Künste des 19. Jahrhunderts zu sehen. Ein Highlight ist der „Elephant Tapestry“. Gewoben aus Wolle, Seide und Metallfäden im französischen Abusson, war das Gewebe wohl inspiriert durch die Persische Miniaturkunst (persische Miniaturmalerei, auch in der Buchkunst) und zeigt die hohe Affinität der Franzosen für exotische Motive für französische Textilien in der damaligen Zeit um 1840.

For the Love-List: Marrokanisch inspirierte Fliesen. Wenn ich die Möglichkeit hätte, würde ich einen ganzen Raum mit exotischen Fliesen verkleiden … die Wände, den Boden, die Decke. Und dennoch: Ich kann mich so schlecht von Weihnachtsdekor trennen! Der Winter ist ja noch lange, auch wenn uns zwischendurch frühlingshafte Tage überraschen. Um noch eine Weile den Glanz und Zauber der weissen Weihnacht aufrecht zu erhalten: Wie wärs, ein paar Stücke des Lieblingsweihnachtsschmuckes in einer schönen Silber- oder Glasschale zu arrangieren, bevor sie definitiv für den Rest des Jahres in den Schachteln auf dem Estrich verschwinden? He takes the antique textiles and make them into one-of-a-kind pillows. Matisse wuchs seit jüngster Kindheit mit Textilien auf. Seine Vorfahren waren über Generationen hinweg französische Weber. So waren Stoffe zeitlebens eine zentrale Inspirationsquelle für den Künstler, der neben Picasso zu den wichtigsten Künstlern der Moderne zählt. Sein Studio in Nizza war eine wahre Schatzkammer aus exotischen Perischen Teppichen, arabischen Stickereien, afrikanischen Behängen und unzähligen, farbenfrohen Kissen, Vorhängen und Kostümen. Seine expressiven Farben sind Markenzeichen seiner Werke. Dennoch waren die „Unfarben“ Schwarz und Weiss ein immer wiederkehrendes, künstlerisches Thema für Matisse und fand Eingang in sein grosses Schaffen. Ich liebe die Bilder von Matisse. Hier ein paar Black and White Eindrücke. Die Portraits stammen meist von Man Ray, aufgenommen in Vence und Nizza.

Tricia Guild, English Interior Designer (I had the chance to meet her at her private home in Kensington, London, last year) is a master of combining black and white in her just so colourful world with floral textiles and bold mixtures. The fall 2010 collection is inspired by grand gardens and theatre design - in combination with white and black, it’s absolute gorgeous!

Designers Guild does have a collection of over 80 black and white fabrics across a huge variety of qualities and textures in every possible neutral shade. These fabrics are basics and can be combined with the seasonal colours and materials.

A Nice Life – More of Elliott Puckette and Hugo Guiness

Elliott comes from Tennessee, graduated with a BFA, is an American artist and mother, and her husband is Hugo Guiness, an artist and a member of the Guiness family of England. Elliott crafts glorious etchings of calligraphy-inspired curves and spirals. Hugo is known for his lino-cuts and illustration work.

Frankly, I've always been drawn to the sophisticated curves of calligraphy and ornament. In fact, I am generally obsessed with it. I even signed up for a course once upon time; unfortunately, the course was cancelled due to lack of interest. Apparently, there isn't much modern day interest in calligraphy and ornament. So, when I browsed through an old issue of Elle Decor (2000) a couple of days ago and found Elliott Puckette, well let's just say: I am a fan. Stefanie Weyhe ist eine Zauberin. In ihrem Düsseldorfer Atelier fertigt die Designerin Schmuckkreationen aus antiken und modernen Elementen. So kreierte sie zum Beispiel ein Armband mit antiken Schmetterlingen aus rosafarbenen Glassteinen und glanzvollen Swarovski-Perlen. Auch Muranoglos und Edelsteine werden verarbeitet und mit einem antiken tschechischen Heiligen-Medaillon kombiniert. Das Resultat sind Trouvaillen von einer ganz besonderen, sinnlichen Ausstrahlung. For all the beautiful women who love handbags: The so traditional mochila handbag is a must-have in the coming season (you will see!!). For those who are not familiar with it: the mochila is the traditional woven bag indigenous to the women of the South American country Colombia. Recently, as Cartagena has become such a popular resort destination, more and more people (I mean senses-chic women!) are picking them up from the local artisanal vendors and taking them to Europe. The popularity of these bags is also a great thing for the Wayuu America_Indian tribeswomen who make them; these women sustain their villages’ economy by handmaking these pieces and selling them to local vendors. Each bag takes up to 40 hours of work, and all designs and color choices are unique.
Recently there has been a project, the so called “The Mochila Project”. It is a project - conceived and executed in just two months—wherein the traditional handicraft of these handbags was spiced up with the techniques and styles of contemporary fashion designers. Each participating designer was given a traditional bag to be updated and embellished in any way. The results were stunning. There are exotic crocodile and silver hardware, designer Phillip Lim tricked out with crystals, whereas Missoni wove theirs in threads of silk and colored the chain and trimmings. Trends arent’ usual a focus at a flea market. But sometimes it’s hard to resist observing them anyway. I spotted some nice pieces. Looking at them, my mind flashed back to vintage style I love so much. Among my favourites are vintage thread spools, vintage shoe stretchers, a set of Thonet chairs (painted yellow), vintage wooden spools, a rabbit (I wanted it so badly…), antique scrolls which are so beautiful and kind of dramatic.

I’m not trying to favor one particular flower; but I do love peonies. The flower shops in Basel and Zurich are where I happened to find magenta-ish peonies, but didn’t spot the May blooms in white for sale anywhere around Basel. The not-so-great pictures don’t capture the depth of the color. Finding the jewel tones in an affordable bunch (chf 55.-- anyway!) was a pleasure. In stores like Au Bouquet and Bluemehuus in Basel have been loads of the medium pink.

Everyone should have a 'dream' box or a secret box that locks. Personally, I’m obsessed with old oriental boxes. But I also like the pinky girlish stuff boxes. Not really sure why. I guess boxes are enticing (what has she got in there???), yet more practical than other objects. My boxes (I got a lot of them) are filled with clippings from magazines – places I would like to visit and projects I admire – plus other important documents like certificates, cards and pics worth keeping, mementos, and love letters (the secret things, you know…).

Als Suzani bzeichnet man grossformatige, mit Seiden- oder Wollstickereien verzierte Baumwollstoffe aus dem zentralasiatischen Raum, vorwiegend aus Usbekistan. Der Name stammt aus dem Persischen und bedeutet soviel wie Nadel.
Die grossformatigen Stickereien dienen traditionell als Wandbehänge zur Ausschmückung der Wohnräume in den Häusern der Nomaden. Die Bewohner Usbekistans fertigen auch auch kleinere Stickereien und Kleidung auf diese Art an. Ein Suzani ist traditioneller Teil der Mitgift und wird hierzu entweder aus Anlass einer bevorstehenden Hochzeit hergestellt oder ein bereits bestehender Suzani wird der Braut weiter vererbt.
Die in leuchtenden Farben und mit prachtvollen, oft auch floralen Mustern bestickte Stoffe spiegeln die Wirklichkeit und Lebensphilosophie dieser Nomadenvölker wider. Ein Suzani hat eine starkt ornamentierte Sprache und ist in aufwändiger Handarbeit hergestellt. Je prächtiger, umso wirkungsvoller ist seine Bedeutung als Prestigeobjekt seiner Besitzer. Instead of being annoyed to the volcanic ash clouds over Europe, let’s dream about a peaceful place in Goa: Nilaya Hermitage is one of the best designed hotel in Goa, India. A holiday encounter in Goa brought Hari Ajwani, an Indian engineer settled in Berlin, and Claudia Derain, a fashion stylist from Paris, together more than ten years ago (they fell badly in love with each other... how beautiful). To cement their new life they first rented and renovated an old Portuguese house and ran it as a guest house. The experiment proved such success that they decided to build their own „alternative“ hotel – and so was born Nilaya Hermitage. Hari and Claudia bought a large plot of land on top of a hill, overlooking the Arabian Sea. Difficult access to the site was compensated by spectular views of paddy fields and groves of coconut palms. After three years of effort with the help of Goan architect Dean D’Cruz, the rock-faced building materialised. Each of Nilaya’s twelve guest suites is decorated in a striking assemblage of vivid colours and terrazzo flooring.
I love the safran-coloured „music room“ with floor seating. It is used for music concerts at night or for quiet reading and meditation during the day. Nilaya’s guest suites have names, not numbers, e.g. „Sky room“. Let’s go to India for a time-out.

50 Jahre Panton Chair (1959/1960)

Dies nimmt das Vitra Design Museum (in Zusammenarbeit mit interni by inhofer) zum Anlass für eine umfassende Präsentation der bekanntesten Werke von Verner Panton. Der 1926 in Dänemark geborene Künstler zählt zu den wichtigsten und innovativsten Designern des 20. Jahrhunderts. Alle Entwürfe von Verner Panton sind extravagant und spiegeln sein ausgeprägtes Interesse an den seinerzeit neuen Kunststoffmaterialien wider – ob Amoebe Sessel, C1 Sessel oder der wohl bekannteste Panton Chair. Verner Panton beschäftigte sich viele Jahre mit der Idee, einen Kunststoffstuhl aus einem Guss zu realisieren. Gemeinsam mit Vitra entstanden in den 60er Jahren die ersten Prototypen, ab 1967 wurde der Panton Chair serien- mässig produziert. Dieser Designer Stuhl galt 1967 als Sensation und wurde mit zahlreichen Preisen ausgezeichnet. Einer der ersten Stühle wurde im Museum of Modern Art in New York ausgestellt (und steht dort immer noch!). Heute gehört der Panton Chair zu den Klassikern des modernen Möbel-Designs. Already spring in Portugal: At weekend, a friend of mine, illustrator Marco Schaaf attended a Catholic ceremonial in the South of Portugal. He spotted some vibrant flower decoration alongside the floor entrance in front of a white chapel. Soft lavender, midday flowers and ox-eye daisies were arranged like a Moroccan mosaic….I love how the flowers were juxtaposed in a colourful way. Yvan Rodic (kleines Bild rechts), besser bekannt als Facehunter, ist auf der Jagd. Seine Waffe ist die Kamera. Rodic reist rund um den Globus auf der Suche nach außergewöhnlichen, modischen Outfits, Gesichtern und Geschichten, um diese auf seinem Blog www.facehunter.blogspot.com zu zeigen. Seine Jagd auf spezielle Gesichter begann im kleinen Rahmen auf einer Pariser Party und weitete sich rasant aus. An exhibition of paintings of Chinese landscapes from Fukuda Kodojin, a well-known publisher of Chinese Verse (Haikus) and painter, just opened at Bachmann Eckenstein Gallery in Basel and continues through April 24, 2010. The opening reception is scheduled for Saturday, April 10, 2010, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Ready for a little drink at this place-to-be?
Kodojin (1865-1944) was born in the small town of Shingu in rural Wakayama Prefecture. Although he became so skilled in Chinese poetry that he published a collection of verse while in his twenties, Kodojin switched to making modern-style haiku after becoming a follower of Masaoka Shiki (1867-1902) in 1889. Writing under his haijin name, Haritsu, Kodojin frequently published haiku in poetry magazines in the late Meiji period, and he became widely known as Shiki's diciple. In the last thirty years of his life, he again wrote Chinese verse and began to paint distinctive literati landscapes signed with his painting name, Kodojin. He also made simple paintings of plants and flowers that emphasized his dramatic brushwork and inscriptions of Chinese poetry. Kodojin was one of the earliest admirers of Tomita Keisen, who possessed a similar taste of unusual compositions and unconventional brushwork. Although the details of Kodojin's patronage remain unclear, a great many of his paintings are exquisitely mounted, suggesting that his works were acquired by wealthy collectors.

Die „Sex-and-the-City“-Autorin Candace Bushnell hat einen grossen Gesellschaftsroman vorgelegt, in dem sie die New Yorker Upperclass klug und mit schwarzem Humor vorführt.
Wieder stehen in ihrem neuen Roman „One Fifth Avenue“ fünf Frauen im Zentrum des Geschehens. Doch sind es keineswegs fünf Freundinnen, die sich durch den Grossstadtdschungel auf der Suche nach Mr. Big kämpfen wie einst in ihrer sehr erfolgreich verfilmten Kolumnensammlung „Sex and the City“. Es geht in ihrem neuen Roman um fünf ehrgeizige Gesellschaftsladies, die bisweilen zu Gegenspielerinnen werden. Ziel ihrer Bestrebungen ist das „perfekte Appartement“. Dieses befindet sich in Downtown Manhattan, in der prominenten One Fifth Avenue. Es ist ein heiss begehrtes, klassisches Art-déco-Gebäude aus grauem Sandstein, über dessen drei oberste Stockwerke sich ein traumhaftes 600-QuadratmeterDomizil erstreckt. Als eines Tages die betagte Besitzerin Mrs. Houghton stirbt, beginnt der unerbittliche Kampf um die Immobilie.
Ob in „Four Blondes“, „Lipstick Jungle“, „Trading up“(„Raufschlafen“) oder nun in „One Fifth Avenue“ – Candace Bushnell schreibt kultverdächtige Bücher. Bushnell berichtet aus der Welt der Reichen und Schönen, porträtiert kreative, intelligente und selbstbewusste Frauen, die sich in New York durch die harten Lektionen, die sie beim Kampf um Macht, Geld und Prestige zu lernen haben, nicht unterkriegen lassen. Ihre Romane überzeugen nicht nur durch die Stimmigkeit der Details, die Autorin kennt die Manhattan-Elite aus eigener Anschauung. Sie weiss, was man in New York trägt, trinkt, einkauft und welcher Club gerade angesagt ist. Bushnell bewahrt dabei aber eine Distanz, die eine solch genaue Beschreibung erst möglich macht. Bushnell „seziert“ die Menschen der Manhattaner-Upperclass in ihrem im Jahr 2007 spielenden Sittengemälde: ihre Wünsche und Hoffnungen, ihre Unersättlichkeit, ihre Grausamkeit und Disziplin, ihre Selbstzweifel und Anspruchsdenken. Mag sein, dass den Leser dabei bisweilen das Gefühl beschleicht, in Zeiten der Krisen und grossen Umbrüchen einer untergehenden Spezies beim Leben zuzusehen.
Meines Erachtens ist es Bushnells bislang bester Roman über altes und neues Geld. Und darüber hinaus ist es ein Buch, das sich nicht mehr einfach nur unter dem Begriff „Frauenliteratur“ einordnen lässt, sondern auf dem Weg ist zu den grossen Gesellschaftsromanen unserer Zeit.

In this spring and summertime we will see them in fashion, art, industrial design and whatsoever! Dots are in! As a world of art, the 1st Singapore Biennale obviously was a trendsetter for this style: The trees of Singapore’s most famous grand avenue, about two and a half kilometers long, full of shopping centers, hotels, restaurants, night clubs, were red-white dotted. How about a colourful paint in our cities these times? May be it would lighten up the public and private mood!
